Robinson-Motive in Haushofers „Die Wand“.

The novelty in the development of typical Robinson motifs in Haushofer’s novel “Die Wand” (‘The Wall’) underscores the lack of a stringent and practically applicable definition for the genre of the robinsonade. Works are often attributed to this genre solely on the basis of a Robinson-like isolation of their protagonists. There has also been a proliferation of literary works since the 1950s in which the reason for the isolation of the protagonists is a global (nuclear) catastrophe. Because of this combination of isolation and global destruction “The Wall”, published in 1963, is regarded as belonging both to the robinsonade and to post-apocalyptic fiction. This paper argues firstly for combining the two generic names to “postapocalyptic robinsonade” according to a practically applicable, clearly defined catalogue of motifs based on Defoe’s “Robinson Crusoe”. Then “Robinson Crusoe” and “The Wall” are compared and contrasted using the catalogue of motifs, the results of which show how the modern text, which describes the survival after a global catastrophe, contains all the generic motifs of the robinsonade, but from a new perspective, which goes beyond both the colonialism and the anthropocentrism of “Robinson Crusoe”.
