The topic of this article are the German introducers of infinitive phrases um, ohne, (an)statt and außer and the comparison with their Italian equivalents per, a; senza; invece di; tranne, oltre a. The theoretical part discusses whether these elements are to be classified as prepositions or as connectors. The empirical part considers syntactic and semantic questions concerning the choice of the subject, the position of phrases in the sentence and the semantic interpretation of these elements on the basis of a written corpus. German and Italian are shown to differ in particular with regard to the connection between the semantic interpretation and the choice of the subject.
